Your Background represents your character's life before adventure. It grants +1 to two different stats and a narrative hook that informs your roleplaying. This is the first step in character creation, applied on top of your chosen Template's base stat array.

A life of deals, roads, and reading people. You might have been a merchant, a wandering bard, or a caravan guard. Either way, you've seen a dozen cities, learned three languages, and know that the real currency is trustâand how to fake it.

Don't choose your Background purely for the stat bonuses. The narrative hook is just as important as the mechanical benefit. A Street Rat plays differently from a Hunter even though they share the same stat bonusesâ the former knows cities and people, while the latter knows wilderness and beasts.
