Backgrounds

Step 1: Where did you come from?

Your Background represents your character's life before adventure. It grants +1 to two different stats and a narrative hook that informs your roleplaying. This is the first step in character creation, applied on top of your chosen Template's base stat array.

Quick Reference
  • Choose one Background during Step 1 of character creation
  • Add the stat bonuses to your Template's base stats
  • Use the narrative hook to inform your character's personality and history

The Twelve Backgrounds

Street Rat

Stat Bonus: +1 Body, +1 Mind

You grew up surviving on instinct and cunning in the city's underbelly. Every meal was earned, every rooftop was a highway, and every noble who walked past you was a mark. You know how to read danger, how to disappear, and how to thrive when others would starve.

Acolyte

Stat Bonus: +1 Heart, +1 Spirit

Raised in devotion and trained in sacred rites. Whether you served a god, a temple, or a monastic order, your life was one of ritual, prayer, and quiet discipline. You learned compassion, faith, and the mysteries that lie beyond the physical world.

Traveler

Stat Bonus: +1 Mind, +1 Heart

A life of deals, roads, and reading people. You might have been a merchant, a wandering bard, or a caravan guard. Either way, you've seen a dozen cities, learned three languages, and know that the real currency is trust—and how to fake it.

Soldier

Stat Bonus: +1 Body, +1 Heart

Discipline and camaraderie from birth. You know formation and loyalty. Whether you were raised in a garrison town, conscripted young, or followed your parent's regiment, the military shaped you. You understand hierarchy, tactics, and the weight of following orders—or refusing them.

Scholar

Stat Bonus: +1 Mind, +1 Spirit

You've studied forbidden texts and walked the ruins of ancient civilizations. Academia shaped your mind, but it was what you found in the margins—the heretical annotations, the sealed archives, the truths no one wanted spoken—that changed you.

Hunter

Stat Bonus: +1 Body, +1 Mind

You tracked game and predators across wild lands. Survival was a skill you learned before you could read. You know how to move silently, how to read tracks, how to wait for hours without moving, and how to take the shot that counts.

Noble

Stat Bonus: +1 Heart, +1 Mind

You lost your title but kept your education and your silver tongue. Maybe you were exiled. Maybe your house fell. Either way, you know court etiquette, political maneuvering, and how to wear confidence like armor even when you have nothing left.

Spirit-Touched

Stat Bonus: +1 Spirit, +1 Heart

Something otherworldly marked you at birth. Spirits notice you. Maybe you were born during an eclipse, or a ghost whispered your name before you could speak. You see things others don't, and the boundary between worlds has always been thinner for you.

Pit Fighter

Stat Bonus: +1 Body, +1 Spirit

You survived the arena's blood and roar, and something in you hardened beyond the physical. Every fight was life or death. The crowd's hunger fed something dark in your soul. You learned to endure not just pain, but the weight of killing for sport.

Witch

Stat Bonus: +1 Spirit, +1 Mind

You learned folk magic from an eccentric elder in the margins of society. Curses, charms, herb-lore, and blood-pacts—your education was practical, dangerous, and deeply personal. People feared your teacher. Now they fear you.

Apprentice

Stat Bonus: +1 Mind, +1 Body

You trained under a master craftsperson—patience, precision, and strong hands. Whether you learned blacksmithing, carpentry, clockwork, or another trade, you know the satisfaction of making something real. And you know that mastery takes years, not shortcuts.

Outlaw

Stat Bonus: +1 Body, +1 Heart

Raised by bandits. You know loyalty, danger, and the cost of a bad reputation. The law means nothing to you except as something to avoid. Your family might have been criminals, but they were your family, and you learned to survive in a world that wanted you dead or locked up.

Stat Distribution Summary

The twelve backgrounds provide balanced coverage of all stat combinations:

Stat Combination Backgrounds
Body + Mind Street Rat, Hunter, Apprentice
Body + Heart Soldier, Outlaw
Body + Spirit Pit Fighter
Mind + Heart Traveler, Noble
Mind + Spirit Scholar, Witch
Heart + Spirit Acolyte, Spirit-Touched
Design Note: Narrative First

Don't choose your Background purely for the stat bonuses. The narrative hook is just as important as the mechanical benefit. A Street Rat plays differently from a Hunter even though they share the same stat bonuses— the former knows cities and people, while the latter knows wilderness and beasts. Let the fiction guide you, and the stats will follow.
